Coming of a New Age
I am 75 years old in a couple of weeks. Turning 70 made a profound psychological different to my life. I felt like I’d taken a step into a twilight world! A parallel dimension in which I was slowly fading from view! Most of my life is behind me in memory and there is precious little time left for any significant future.
I do not fear death at all. In fact, I look forward to it, not because I want to leave this life, I haven’t finished here yet, but because I am curious. I do not see death as a final end, I see it as a new beginning, and the act of dying merely a transitional moment, freeing my consciousness from its human being.
I still have dreams but they are like books I bought that remain unread gathering dust on a forgotten book shelf!
I can accept the diminishing ability for physical or mental sustained work. The drift into daytime slumber following mild activity. The arthritis, the aches that don’t go away, the sudden random pain that invokes a sense that time is short. The occasional thought that I could have done better.
But I have become angrier and more frustrated! I came from a world in which personal contact was everything, it is almost impossible to process the profound disconnection that is deeply entrenched in society today, that fears to trust or care for each other.
No one is altruistically proactive any more. Most are reactive. Integrity is as old as the word itself and its friends, kindness, courtesy, honour and respect have lost their place to entitlement, disdain, scorn and disregard. Such was the promise of smartphones, social media, chat rooms and corporate care!
Now I’m in my 70s, I live in a world of anonymity, misinformation, lies, broken promises and absolutely no one to trust (except my family and closest friends), and there is no road back! But worst of all, I am more and more lacking the energy to make any significant change.
I fear for the future of my child and my grandchildren. But their future is something I cannot visit, not even in my dreams, so I will trust that they will know the right path to follow to salve and heal this troubled world.
I hope now, as I approach my 80s and 90s and my body is less capable, that my conscience and spiritual wisdom will provide me with a new inner strength and tolerance to heal the impoverished human spirit that has beset my fellow humans rich and poor alike.
The one thing I have learned most of all is that Love is the answer to everything and I was lucky to have learned this from a very young age. I trusted this to be true and absolute and it has proved so in every way. This will carry my soul into its own future here, and elsewhere, and awaken to a new beginning .
